iMac

Apple has held a dominant position in the All In One (AIO) computer industry for quite a while now, but with the new iMac they go to a whole new level. With the inclusion of the powerful M1 Chip, they have been able to remove the previous generation’s large logic board and thermal system created the thinnest iMac ever, measuring only 11.5 mm thin.

Excellet Display

The iMac has a 24 inch, 4.5K retina display and a pixel density of 218PPI (pixels per inch)

Very Good Performance

It has a 1080p Facetime HD Camera with the M1 ISP (Image Signal Processor) and a larger sensor than previous generations

Thin Lightweight Design

The M1 chip brings the computer to life and allows for features such as waking up instantly, editing 8K video and quick app launching

Limited features on the base model

The absence of features such as wireless Touch-ID creates a stark difference between the models

Lack of ports

The absence of an ethernet port built on the base model (unlike previous generations) as well as only two Thunderbolt ports forces the consumer to buy many adaptors if they want the same functionality as before

You have to buy a bunch of additives but all in all a great computer. Please research the additions, some do not fit. I'm still looking for a CD player/burner attachment.

As mentioned before, the new iMac has the M1 processor, which improves the performance of the computer immensely. The CPU is 85% faster and the GPU is up to two times faster than the previous Intel i7 chip. Furthermore, the M1 chip grants the iMac to wake instantly, quickly launch apps, have hundreds of Safari tabs as well as being able to edit 8K video. Along with that, the new chip allows the computer to produce less heat and have a smaller logic board, therefore needing a smaller thermal system.

That is how Apple was able to make it so thin. By having a smaller logic board and thermal system, they were able to fit it in the chin of the computer instead of creating a bump at the back. Going beyond the stunning new design, the iMac features the best camera ever in a Mac, with a 1080p Facetime HD camera along with a 4.5K Retina Display and a pixel density of 218ppi (pixels per inch). Additionally, the wireless Touch-ID on the higher end models allow for a more secure experience, like when working on any other Apple Device.

With the inclusion of the powerful M1 Chip, they have been able to remove the previous generation’s large logic board and thermal system created the thinnest iMac ever, measuring only 11.5 mm thin. Due to this, it is speedy and opens apps up almost instantly, as well as allowing heavy apps to run smoother than they ever have before. In short, the iMac is an extremely powerful computer that improves upon its 21.5 inch predecessor in every way possible.

Design Build and Quality

One of the only downsides of the new iMac is that the ethernet port does not come standard with the base model as it did in previous generations but is instead a $30 add-on (comes standard on $1499 and $1699 models).

TechRadar

According to TechRadar, the new 24 inch iMac was “the boldest reinvention of Apple’s iconic All in one” in 15 years. They especially praised the “webcam”, “striking new design” and performance of the computer. We at TheYoungConsumer wholeheartedly agree with their conclusion and that the new design and major changes were extremely effective. Along with that, their extensive testing of the new M1 processor showed the might of Apple’s new chip.

Additionally, TechRadar described the iMac’s new speakers as “very good,” with “room filling volume” but lacking bass at times. On the negative side, they criticised the lack of ports as well as how the Mac Mini may make more sense for some consumers. Costing $699 USD, the Mac Mini also comes equipped with the M1 chip and by simply buying a monitor, some people may prefer this instead of the iMac.

Overall, TechRadar stated that the new iMac was a powerful computer that improved on its predecessor in almost every way.

Tom's Guide

Tom’s Guide’s opinion was almost identical to that of Tech Radars, calling it “a breath of fresh air for the aging iMac line.” We at The Young Consumer believe that this is a wonderful analogy of how necessary the update of the AIO was.

The site commended the new design and the fact that Apple was able to make it a mere 0.45 inches thin, but were disappointed at the absence of an adjustable stand. Along with that, they praised the spatial audio, describing it as rich and vibrant. Finally they complimented the iMac’s 1080p Camera, stating that it creates excellent image quality with the help of the M1 chip, making you look your best in each zoom call.

Overall, their verdict was that the iMac is a “slender-yet-speedy machine packing great speakers, an excellent webcam and a beautiful screen.”

Conclusion

The iMac is a high quality product with exciting new features that was a necessary update from the previous generation. Its predecessor dominates the AIO industry and from the high demand up till now, this iteration doesn’t seem to be an exception. However, the lack of ports and some features on the base model differs greatly from the higher end model.

There is no denying that the iMac is a fantastic product and the way that Apple has made it so thin is almost magic. The inclusion of the M1 chip to yet another of their products has really shown the versatility of this processor. This is definitely a great product for office workers as well as those who are looking for a powerful computer.
